Best Time to Visit Crete
Crete sits in the eastern Mediterranean, with conditions that can differ sharply between the north coast and the south. Summer (July and August) is the busiest and hottest season with the meltemi wind; spring and autumn bring wildflowers, open gorges and a greener island, while winter (November to March) is mild on the coast but wet, with snow on the mountains and rain possible any day. Here is when to go — and when to think twice.
The driest, warmest stretch of the year, with the Balos and Gramvousa boat trips running, wildflowers giving way to summer heat, and sea temperatures at their highest — but also the busiest, priciest weeks, especially in late July and August.
May to October brings warm, dry weather for hiking and gorges across the island, while the November-to-March months bring rain and wind, with the old towns, museums and monasteries still open for a quieter, cheaper visit.
The between-seasons: some boat trips, thermal pools and rural restaurants scale back for maintenance, and several coastal trails can still be closed after landslides or reopened only recently.
