Things to do in Agia Pelagia and Fodele
Agia Pelagia and Fodele share the coast road west of Heraklion, not much else. Agia Pelagia is a modern beach resort in a sheltered bay about 18 km and 25-30 minutes by car or KTEL coach from Heraklion, useful for a first or last night near the airport rather than for old-town atmosphere.
Fodele, a few kilometres inland, is the agricultural village where the painter El Greco was born in 1541, in the Heraklion regional unit; it has a small memorial house, not a historic quarter to walk for hours.
Swimming season runs May to October, with the sea a cool 16-18ยฐC in spring and warmer by late summer; July and August are the hottest months and the busiest on this stretch of coast. Neither place offers a Venetian old town on the scale of Chania or Rethymno.
