Things to do on Dia island
Dia is an uninhabited island a few kilometres off Heraklion, and there is no ferry line to it: getting there means booking a boat excursion, usually running May to October, with cancellations likely on a windy day. There is no village, no taverna and no accommodation, so this is a half-day or full-day trip out and back, not a base.
The island, together with the nearby islets of Theodorou and Agii Pandes, is a refuge for the kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat, one of the few strongholds left alongside the Samaria gorge. There is no organised beach with sunbeds here and no archaeological site to visit; Dia is protected chiefly for its nature.
Boat trips around Crete are island-hopping, not wildlife safaris, and dolphin or whale sightings should not be expected.
