Things to do in Platanias and Agia Marina
Platanias and Agia Marina form the beach strip closest to Chania, a short drive or a KTEL bus ride west along the coast road rather than a day trip requiring an organised excursion.
This is the practical choice for anyone based in the Venetian old town who wants sand without giving up a city bed: the season runs May to October, the sea reaching 21-25 degC by June and 24-27 degC in September, with July and August hotter at 30-35 degC and busier. The meltemi, a north wind that blows mainly in July and August, can chop up this north coast while the south stays calm.
Sunbeds and umbrellas are rented by the day at the going beach-bar rate, and Greek law requires every beach to keep a free strip and a clear path down to the water. Do not expect a village atmosphere here; this is Chania's seafront, not a hideaway.
