Things to do in the Therisso gorge
The Therisso gorge climbs into the foothills of the White Mountains south of Chania, a narrow road threading past traditional stone villages rather than a single sight to tick off. It makes a quiet alternative to the busier coastal road toward Kissamos, roughly 30 to 40 minutes' drive from Chania.
No reliable KTEL service runs this route, so a rental car is essential, and the mountain lanes are narrow enough that local drivers pull onto the hard shoulder out of courtesy, not as an invitation to overtake. May to October is the most comfortable season; earlier in that window the White Mountains still carry snow, visible from several points along the drive, often into May or June.
There is no archaeological site here and no beach nearby, and restoration in the villages is limited.
