Things to do in Georgioupoli
Georgioupoli sits where the Almyros river meets the sea, roughly midway between Chania and Rethymno on the VOAK highway, and easy to reach by car or by the KTEL coaches that run the north coast.
The beach stretches for several kilometres east of the river mouth, backed by tamarisk trees, and the swimming season runs May to October, with the sea around 21-25 ยฐC by June and 24-27 ยฐC in September; July and August are hottest and busiest. This is a small, family-oriented beach village rather than a heritage stop, with no Venetian old town and no major ruin to plan a day around.
A short drive inland reaches Lake Kournas, the island's only natural freshwater lake. Outside the May-October window many tavernas and rental outfits close for winter, and the pace turns genuinely quiet.
