Things to do in Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is the working base for Lasithi, the north coast's easternmost stop on the KTEL run from Chania and Heraklion. Its centre is built around a small round lake and a harbour, not a Venetian old town like Chania's, so keep expectations for historic streets in check.

Boats to Spinalonga leave from here, from Plaka and from Elounda, roughly 20-30 minutes each way, to a Venetian fortress of 1579 that served as Europe's last leper colony from 1903 to 1957 - the setting of Victoria Hislop's novel The Island, and recent human history rather than backdrop.

The Lasithi plateau and the hill village of Kritsa are both short drives away. Local time is Eastern European, one hour ahead of Paris and Rome.
