Things to do at Knossos

The frescoes you see at Knossos are replicas: the originals sit 5 km away in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, and a combined ticket covers both. What survives at the site is a mix of genuine Bronze Age remains and a 20th-century concrete restoration, so treat the rebuilt sections as a reconstruction rather than untouched Minoan fabric.

Knossos was the ceremonial and administrative heart of Minoan Crete, and its clay tablets carry Linear A, still undeciphered, alongside later Linear B, Mycenaean Greek. It was never the island's Roman capital, a role that fell to Gortyna in the Messara plain further south.

The site has almost no shade, and with July-August temperatures reaching 30-35 °C, an opening-time visit, around 8am, beats the midday crowds and heat.
