Things to do in Kissamos
Kissamos sits at the western tip of Crete, and most visitors pass through rather than stay. Its harbour is the departure point for boats to Balos lagoon and Imeri Gramvousa, an alternative to the 8 km dirt track most rental contracts exclude from cover. Boats run May to October, and the meltemi wind can cancel sailings in July and August.
Seasonal ferries also leave from here for Kythira and Antikythira. Beyond the port, Kissamos works better as a base than a sight in itself: Falassarna, Elafonissi (about 76 km and two hours from Chania) and the gorge village of Topolia are all within reach.
There is a small archaeological collection and a modest old quarter, but nothing to rival Chania or Rethymno.
