Things to do around Topolia and the Elos chestnut villages

This is a mountain detour, not a destination: a single road climbing inland from the Kissamos-Elafonissi corridor through Topolia, where the village street runs straight through a rock-cut tunnel, then up into the chestnut country around Elos. There is no archaeological site here and no beach; the draw is the drive itself and a handful of stone villages that see far fewer cars than the coast.

The KTEL coach network barely reaches this route, unlike the north-coast line linking Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion, so a rental car is effectively required. July and August bring heat with little shade on the switchbacks; late April to June or September suit the climb better, and chestnuts are gathered in autumn.

Expect a taverna or two in season, not a run of choices, and plan this as an add-on for travellers already routing between Kissamos or Elafonissi and the interior.
