Things to do in Panormos and Bali
Panormos and Bali sit on the busy north coast between Rethymno and Heraklion, both served by KTEL coaches running the VOAK/E75 highway, and both work best as a swimming stop rather than a destination in themselves. Neither has a Venetian old town to compare with Rethymno's, 20-25 minutes away, and there is no archaeological site within easy reach.
The swimming season runs May to October: the sea is a cool 16-18°C in spring, warmer by late August and September. July and August bring the north coast's heaviest crowds, and these coves are popular precisely because the highway makes them so easy to reach, so do not expect a quiet beach in high season.
They are not a base for the south of the island, which lies over an hour away across the mountains.
