Things to do in Kalyves and Almyrida
Kalyves and Almyrida are two sheltered bays in Apokoronas, roughly 20-25 minutes by car east of Chania's old town, which is exactly why families base here: shallow, calm water and beaches with a fraction of the crowds you get at Platanias or Agia Marina.
The season that matters is May to October; July and August bring the heat, 30-35 °C, the highest prices and the meltemi, a north wind that can chop up the coast here while the south stays flat calm.
The KTEL bus reaches this stretch only a handful of times a day, well short of the Chania-Rethymno-Heraklion service, so a rental car earns its keep pairing the two villages with nearby Lake Kournas. Don't come expecting Venetian old-town streets or Chania-style nightlife — these are quiet beach bases, not sightseeing destinations.
