Things to do in Crete
Crete is not one destination but four regional units running east to west: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi, spread across 8,336 km2, about 260 km long but only 12 to 60 km wide, home to roughly 620,000 people. Three airports serve it, Heraklion (HER), Chania (CHQ) and the small Sitia (JSH); the new Kastelli airport is still under construction and takes no flights.
A rental car is the practical way to get around, since the KTEL coach network only really works along the north coast between Chania and Agios Nikolaos, and there is no train and no ski lift. Chania to Sitia is about 270 km and over four hours of driving, so no single base covers the island, and the Hersonissos-Malia resort strip is only around 20 km of a 260 km coastline.
