Things to do in Anogia and Mount Psiloritis

Anogia sits at around 740 m on the northern flank of Psiloritis, also called Mount Ida, and it is the practical starting point for the island's highest ground at 2,456 m. Snow can linger on the summit into May or June, but there is no ski lift or cable car anywhere on Crete, so reaching altitude means walking, not riding.

The KTEL coach network does not reach this far into the mountains; it runs the north coast from Chania to Agios Nikolaos, and Anogia is not on that line, so a rental car is the only realistic way up. The road narrows fast above the village, and the local habit is to pull onto the hard shoulder to let a faster car pass, not to overtake blind on it.

Walking the upper slopes only makes sense from May to October, and even then, late-spring snow at height can close the route without warning.
